contains a date in any format.
any date written on the document (by the issuer, by the recipient, by an archivist or by anybody else) or given by the editor.
While used as direct child of <chDesc> it is understood as the date of issuing the charter as it is seen be the editor.

functional distinction?
In general: in my eyes, we should use more often different elements for different things; for example: to distinguish between the date of the charter and all other dates that are named within the text of a charter, or a line break in the original charter and a line break in a book where the charter is edited etc.
